The Bailey stage may not be filled with performances this year, but over the summer the Silver Screen Drive-in at Waneta Plaza is bringing the best in recorded concerts, dance, and theatre performances to the big screen.

Presented by Trail & District Arts Council and The Royal Theatre the recorded performances aim to put much needed revenues into artists’ pockets after a particularly difficult year, where artists have been challenged both financially and artistically.

We kick off our Bailey Theatre inspired programming on Thursday, July 22 with a ballet double bill.

The “Ballerina Boys” documentary follows Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, an all-male ballet company that performs classics mixed with exuberant comedy to question their strictly gendered art form. A film full of beauty and fun, it seduces viewers into facing issues of gender, inclusion, and social justice. The Trocks were inspired to form by the Stonewall Riots of 1969, fueled by a spirit of defiance and creative exuberance unleashed by the blossoming gay rights movement. The doc looks at the evolution of the troupe as the dancers go on a bus tour to the Carolinas, the epicenter of efforts to walk back LGBTQ rights. On that trip, the dancers reveal how, by way of wrenching personal histories, they found their serendipitous pathways to the Company.

Paired with the documentary is “ONE WITH”, an 18-minute recorded live piece by Ballet Kelowna. The performance is an expressive, moving, and intimate tribute to those living in long-term care inspired by the father of Ballet Kelowna’s Artistic Director and CEO Simone Orlando. It explores how dementia affects people’s ability to communicate, whilst their inner world can be vast, populated by the people and memories that we hold onto and try to never forget.

On Thursday, July 29 “Ridge” is a vivid, kinetic, intimate, and personal examination of our connection to the past that passionately argues against the exploitation of young lives. Often called the “battle that made Canada,” Vimy Ridge resulted in over 10,000 Canadian casualties. Through this visceral work, told through direct storytelling, verbatim theatre, and live music, Brendan McLeod examines misconceptions and varying perspectives around the battle, while drawing parallels to other formative events in our nation’s past. Featuring inventive musical interpretations of WWI soldier songs performed with his band The Fugitives, “Ridge” probes difficult yet necessary questions about how and why we grieve.

We will be bringing you more exciting shows over the next few months!

So, until we can meet again inside the beautiful Bailey Theatre, throw your lawn chairs in the bed of your truck, snuggle up under a blanket, and join us to watch these amazing films.

The diverse range of fiction films, documentaries and recorded live performances may be seen at the Silver Screen Drive-in every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at dusk in the Waneta Plaza upper parking lot.
