The Trail Smoke Eaters Junior ‘A’ Hockey Club is pleased to announce forward Connor Sweeney (’00) has committed to the team for the 2019/20 season.

Sweeney, 18, comes to Trail after playing with the Lawrence Academy Spartans for the past two seasons, amassing 16 goals and 31 assists for 47 points over that span. During the 2018/19 season, the 6’2”, 194-pound forward helped his team to the Massachusetts Regionals in registering 7 goals and 15 assists for 22 points in 26 games with the Spartans. Sweeney will join former Smoke Eaters forward Chase Stevenson in the fall of 2020 as he is committed to the University of New Hampshire Wildcats.

The North Andover, Massachusetts native has deep hockey bloodlines as his father, Bob, compiled a lengthy National Hockey League career after four terrific seasons at Boston College with the Eagles. Bob Sweeney played in 639 career NHL games, split between the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders and Calgary Flames where he produced 125 goals and 288 points along with 799 penalty minutes in that span.

On a visit to the West Kootenays, Sweeney was impressed with his first trip to the west coast, “I am super excited to be a member of the team,” mentioned the newest Smoke Eaters forward, “I loved everything in Trail from the team to the town to the people, everyone was so nice and welcoming. I’m very excited to play in front of them and ready to work hard in the summer to be the best I can for Trail.”

“We couldn’t be more excited as a staff to add Connor Sweeney to our team,” stated Smoke Eaters General Manager and Head Coach Jeff Tambellini, “Connor is one of the most explosive power forwards coming into the BCHL next season and possesses a pro pedigree. His 6’2” frame will be a challenge for opposing teams to handle and he will complement our skill nicely at the centre ice position.”

“We’re excited to build Connor into a top power forward in the league and have him ready to transition into a full scholarship at the University of New Hampshire the following season” continued the Smoke Eaters bench boss.

The Smoke Eaters would like to welcome Connor and his family to the organization as well as the City of Trail.

Season tickets are now on sale for the 2019/20 Smoke Eaters season and can be purchased at the Smoke Eaters Main Office, located in the Trail Memorial Centre. Office hours are set for Monday to Friday, open between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
