BREAKING: Vehicle in fatal MVI into Salmo River was two-tank fuel truck

New information is surfacing about a fatal MVI and fuel spill on Hwy 3 near Salmo last night.
RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services Sgt. Chad Badry said the vehicle involved was a B-Train fuel truck, meaning a tractor hauling two fuel tankers.
“They were carrying gasoline and diesel,” Badry said. “A significant amount was spilled (into Salmo River).
“The Environmental Emergency Response Team was called in by the Ministry, and arrived last night. They have containment measures in place at the site and at two other sites downstream, so hopefully that will mitigate the impact.”
He said Hwy 3 (as of 3 p.m. Thursday) remains closed and will remain closed for some time yet to come.
“Hopefully, we’ll be able to open it tomorrow.”
One alternate route is the Kootenay Ferry, but he said there are long waits to sail. Other options include going through Golden, or south through the U.S.
“We’re still investigating the cause of the crash,” he added. “I can say that road conditions were not a contributing factor.”
The driver, and Alberta man, was killed in the crash.
