Cops nab suspect in theft-from-vehicles file

Police have arrested a Trail man in connection with a rash of thefts from vehicles in the area, according to Trail RCMP Acting Sgt. Devon Reid.
“On Aug. 21 … Trail RCMP located and arrested a 30-year-old male for at least six offences stemming from the theft of items from unlocked motor vehicles in the Trail, Fruitvale and Montrose areas,” Reid said. “The offences include Possession of Stolen Property, Theft of a Credit Card, Use of a stolen Credit Card and Theft Under $5,000.
“In each case, the suspect entered an unlocked vehicle and removed items that were left in the vehicle.”
He said these crimes are often difficult to investigate, as the kind of things stolen from cars (cash, electronics, etc.) can be impossible to trace, particularly if the owners haven’t recorded the serial numbers (in the case of electronics).
In this case, however, it was relatively simple to identify a culprit.
“With one of the vehicles, he took a debit/credit card, then used it in more than one local store with surveillance cameras,” Reid explained.
He said police are seeking to hold the male in custody for court on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
“Trail RCMP would like to remind local residents to lock their vehicles and remove any valuable items from plain sight in order to prevent thefts like this from occurring.”
