Temporary highway in place near South Slocan Village
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure redesign of the Highway 3A at South Slocan Village is beginning to take shape as crews have completed the temporary road beside the old bridge a few kilometers east from the Highway 3A/6 junction.
The construction replaces the bridge at South Slocan, which was built in the early 1960s and is nearing the end of its lifespan.
Construction crews are in the process of removing the old bridge, before using fill to bring the heavily travelled highway back to its current height. The fill will be removed from the Beasley bluffs.
The removal of part of the Beasley bluffs will further enhance Highway 3A, a few kilometers west of Taghum.
Construction near South Slocan Village will see a wider radius curve for the new stretch of highway, better alignment, better sight lines; two meter paved shoulders as well as a left-turn lane into the South Slocan Village Road for westbound traffic.
The new design also includes pedestrian underpass access.
The ministry worked closely with local government, the Slocan Valley Heritage Trails Society, the Trans Canada Trail Society and the Regional District of Central Kootenay to further enhance trail connectivity in the area.
