Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue responded to two brush fires in the Champion Lakes area within minutes of each other, according to Captain Grant Tyson.

The call came in at 2:28 p.m. and the incidents were under control by 3 p.m.

“They had it out in short order,” Tyson. “We sent a lot of resources. It’s not getting any better out there, so we’re on top of things.”

Twelve firefighters responded from Warfield, Montrose, Trail and Fruitvale.

Shockingly, one of the fires was caused by someone flicking their cigarette out a window, and RCMP are currently on scene investigating. The penalties for this sort of behaviour in B.C. have become significant.

The second fire was started by a tree hitting a power line.

“Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue would like to remind everyone to please carefully discard their cigarettes,” Tyson said.
