Fire update as of Thursday at 3:25 p.m.
Currently in the Southeast Fire District, there are 21 fires actively burning, according to Fire Information Officer John Boivin, all but nine of which are being held or under control (those that are not are way up into the mountains and/or very small).
The closest are two near Hoder Creek in the Slocan (the first is one hectare and is under control, the second is nine hectares and is being held) and one spot fire by Little Slocan Lake (again, under control).
None are threatening communities or structures.
“There’s nothing of any real concern in the area,” Boivin said. “We’re still keeping a close eye on things. It’s still very dry.”
He said there’s weather system moving in creating significantly more wind, possibly dry lightning and scattered rain. It’ll be cooler today and tomorrow, and warming up a bit over the weekend.
“We may see smoke coming back into the region when this storm system passes through and the wind shifts again.”
To date this season (since April 1) 131 fires have burned 140 hectares in the Southeast Fire Region, compared to last years 49 fires burning 316 hectares.
Province-wide, we have 162 fires burning, and a total of 702 to date this season burning 410,213 hectares.
