A Grand Forks woman has died and the 13-year-old female was severely injured after a two-vehicle collision early Sunday near the community of Jaffray in the East Kootenay.

Cranbrook RCMP said the collision occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. when an east bound pickup truck crossed the center of the roadway, for unknown reasons, into the path of a semi-truck hauling passenger vehicles.

“The pickup truck was carrying three female persons including a 13-year-old youth,” the RCMP release said.

“The collision resulted in the death of the driver of the pickup, a Grand Forks area female, severe injury to the 13-year-old girl and non-life threatening injuries to the second female passenger of the pickup truck and the semi-truck driver.”

The release said the collision is currently being investigated by the Cranbrook Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with assistance from East Kootenay Traffic Services, Collision Reconstructionist and the British Columbia Commercial Vehicle Inspectors Service.

The RCMP said the roadway at the time of the collision was clear and dry.

Police would like to remind drivers to take frequent breaks when driving to remain fresh and alert.
