Nelson Fire Rescue and Nelson Police combined Friday afternoon to rescue a person who had capsized a canoe in Kootenay Lake.

Both emergency services responded to a call at 4:19 p.m. of a person in a canoe that had capsized but was unable to get the boat righted.

“Both on duty members responded immediately and met up with Nelson Police Department members,” Nelson Fire Rescue said in a media release.

“One joint crew responded with the city watercraft while other members responded to the shore closest to the overturned canoe.”

Nelson Fire Rescue said when crews arrived at the shore they were able to see that the person was not able to get back in his canoe.

Simultaneously NPD officers responded with the Police Department watercraft to the canoe’s location.

“The person was more than 200 meters from shore and was not able to get himself back into the canoe,” Nelson Fire Rescue said.

“When the members in the boat reached the patient they were able to bring him on board and bring him to shore to be assessed by EHS members. The patient had no significant injuries and was treated for some minor cuts and scrapes as well as provided a blanket to help warm up.”

Two Nelson Fire Rescue members along with three from the Nelson Police Department responded as well as EHS personnel.

Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to be safe around the water and always wear your lifejacket.
