RCMP Senior Media Relations Officer Annie Linteau says the search for missing Crawford Bay teacher Alvin Dunic remains a mystery.

Linteau said members from Nelson Search and Rescue as well as Swift Water Teams from Kimberley, Oliver/Osoyoos and Penticton searched Crawford Creek this week again with no success.

“Swimmers in the water targeted areas using underwater cameras, sight tubes and probes,” Linteau said after improved clarity and lower water levels allowed searchers to return to the scene Monday where Dunic was last seen.

“This allowed difficult areas to be searched as pools ranged in depths to 15 feet and undercuts of four feet.”

The 57-year-old Crawford Bay Elementary School teacher was reported missing Monday, May 29 at 2:45 p.m. after leaving the school to look for a suitable location for a class project in the Crawford Creek area.

Following an exhausting week of searching that included Search and Rescue teams from throughout BC, the search was suspended on June 4th, 2017.

However, this week water levels in Crawford Creek receded sufficiently for search efforts to resume.

Alvin Dunic’s wife, Teeka Ferguson told media she is not giving up on the search, believing her husband may have become confused and could be elsewhere.

Ferguson said Alvin suffered an episode of confusion approximately five years ago

Linteau said Wednesday, a police dog and handler team was brought in to search the area.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Dunic has yet to be located,” she said.

RCMP is asking the public to be on the lookout for Dunic or any clothing, footwear or personal items that may assist in locating the missing teacher. Anyone with information should contact RCMP or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Alvin Dunic is described as:

  • Caucasian male
  • 5’10”
  • medium build
  • with balding/dark hair.
  • Last seen wearing a light coloured short sleeve shirt, khaki shorts and loafers.
