Parking in Nelson just got a little tougher
As if there wasn’t enough problems with parking in Nelson, now stalls at the only parkade in the city one are being closed until upgrades can be completed.
The news, announced in a media press release, comes after an engineering firm recently completed a detailed structural assessment of the City parkade as part of the Council’s priority to better understand the condition of all City facilities.
The City will also undertake general condition assessments of all City owned facilities in 2016.
“The parkade was identified on our list of facilities as needing repair,“ said Facilities Maintenance Manager, Peter Sinstadt. “The extent of these repairs, including cost and timeline, is yet to be fully determined.”
The Nelson parkade is owned by the City of Nelson and leased and operated by a third party operator.
Sinstadt said during a routine inspection of the parkade, it was determined that due to the age and condition of the building that a further detailed engineering assessment would be required to determine the scope of the work required to ensure the safety and longevity of the structure.
He said the final report from the engineering firm identified some deficiencies in the original design but that overall facility is in good repair.
The City is currently working on a detailed project plan to address these deficiencies to ensure the parkade’s long term safety and stability.
Sinstadt said the number of stalls impacted are 10 stalls on four floors, and five stalls on one floor of the parkade, for a total of 45 stalls.
Sinstadt said the occupants of these parking stalls have been informed of the situation, and will be relocated to other parking stalls in the parkade.
Unfortunately, the amount of day-use stalls available for public use will be temporarily impacted until the repairs are completed.
“We understand that parking is limited in the downtown core,” says City Manager, Kevin Cormack.
“It is important, however, that we maintain and repair our facilities to a high standard. Our staff will work closely with contractors to mitigate the amount of disruption for current parkade users.”
The City will provide updates to the occupants of the parkade and to the public on the progress of the repairs to the parkade.
