Man who climbs tree to escape Nelson Police in court Monday to face long list of charges
Nelson Police said a 26-year-old man who tried his best to get away from officers is being held in custody to appear in court in Nelson Monday to answer to charges of breaching release conditions, assault, resisting arrest and escaping lawful custody following an incident Friday (May 2) in Rosemont.
Nelson Police were originally called at 2:20 a.m. to deal with an unwanted person at a Rosemont home.
A male had returned after being told to leave, kicking in the door the second time to gain access.
NPD officers took the man into custody without incident. He was held for the night in cells.
The man was released later the same day, charged with damaging property and conditions to not attend the residence in Rosemont.
However, a short time after the release the homeowner called to say the man returned to the Rosemont residence before assaulting the owner.
Members attended, but before the man could be apprehended he male fled on foot, eventually climbing a tree to elude capture.
The Nelson Fire Department was asked to assist in finding a safe way to get this male down from his 40-foot perch.
BC Ambulance was also asked to attend.
Police decided to allow the male to climb down the tree when he felt safe.
Once on the ground the man immediately tried to get back to the residence but was taken into police custody.
The man is now being charged with breaching release conditions, assault, resisting arrest and escaping lawful custody.
