The regional fire chief is reminding residents to exercise extreme caution when engaging in outdoor recreation after two blazes in the Trail area this afternoon.

Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue Chief Terry Martin said 22 firefighters from three communities (Trail, Montrose and Warfield) were dispatched today.
“The first call came in at 1 p.m. – we were notified by Teck Fire Rescue of a fire near Thunder Road – it was a grass fire about two hectares in size,” Martin said. “Then, at about 2:55 p.m., we got a report of another fire just past the Sunningdale treatment plant that was between half-an-acre and an acre in size.

“We had to redeploy some of our resources and crews from the first call to the second.”

Both fires were extinguished without incident, and no structures were involved.

“We’ll probably never know what caused these two fires, but they were out where people recreate,” Martin added.” We’re certainly not pointing any fingers, but we’re asking people to be very careful, as it’s incredibly dry out there.”
