Youth Gear Up to Offer Youth-Run Film Festival

SelfDesign Learning Community and the Nelson Civic Theatre are teaming up to offer a Youth Film Festival, held at Nelson’s Civic Theatre April 15-16.
The festival features short animation, documentary and fiction films created by youth aged 13-30 from around the province.
“I think learning from your peers is one of the best ways,” said 17-year-old festival organizer Sara Nunn.
“It gives you the feeling that nothing is impossible.”
“In this spirit, the festival has taken a for-youth by-youth approach, while also inviting seasoned filmmakers to share their expertise through hands-on workshops,” Nunn adds.
Submissions are now open in the 13-15, 16-19, and 20-30 age categories and films up to 20 minutes in length will be accepted until March 31.
“The festival not only showcases young talent -it is being organized and run by a dedicated group of SelfDesign high school students,” Nunn explains.
While the festival’s opening night will be dedicated to screening selected BC youth films, the closing night will feature a selection of Canada’s brightest young filmmakers, hand picked from the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The organizers hope that participants leave feeling inspired, and with a lot of new friends.
