UPDATED: Officer-involved fatal shooting on Kinnaird Bridge

The IIO issued the following release this morning:

The Independent Investigations Office of BC confirms it is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred at 8 p.m. (Thursday, January 29) evening in Castlegar.

According to the RCMP, officers were responding to a driving complaint on Highway 3 in the city limits of Castlegar. During an attempted traffic stop a male was subsequently shot by the officer. The affected person was transported to hospital for treatment however did not survive his injuries.

The IIO was notified immediately. A team of five Investigators including a forensic specialist will be traveling to Castlegar arriving likely tomorrow morning. RCMP in Castlegar has secured the scene.

The IIO will work with the RCMP as per the MOU signed by the Chief Civilian Director and all BC police agencies.

The BC Coroners Service has jurisdiction over any and all information related to the deceased.

This information is preliminary and limited at this time. More information will be released as soon as possible.

Earlier this evening ( Jan. 29) at approximately 8 p.m., members of the
Castlegar RCMP and West Kootenay Traffic Services Unit responded to a
complaint of a possible impaired driver at a Castlegar business. During
the course of their patrols, a police officer located the subject
vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Highway#3. The RCMP
member exited the police vehicle and ultimately discharged his service
pistol at the vehicle. Confirmed details are limited as the
investigation is in its infancy.

However, the RCMP can confirm the driver of the subject vehicle
suffered a fatal injury. No one else was physically injured.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) has been notified and
they will be asserting jurisdiction. The scene has been secured in
anticipation of their arrival.

As the IIO now has jurisdiction over this matter any further updates
and information will be provided by the investigating agency and
therefore media inquiries should be directed to the Independent
Investigations Office of BC.
