Coastal-like snowfall causes vehicles to play bumper cars on Cedar Street in Nelson

The first major snowfall in weeks caught some drivers in the City of Nelson off guard as several accidents were reported.
One major bottleneck proved to be the 300 Block of Cedar Street when snow combined with a warming temperature turned the street into a sheet of ice causing vehicles to bounce off of each other around 4 p.m. Saturday.
Nelson Police was called to the scene to find several cars involved in the accident.
NPD closed off the street to traffic with barricades while tow trucks pulled cars away from each other to open up the street.
No injuries were reported.
According to Environment Canada, snow blanketed the region from a disturbance moving southward from the northwest blanketing the province with heavy snowfall Saturday and through the night.
Environment Canada is continuing a weather warning for Sunday (December 28) as cold Arctic air spreads across the interior.
Environment Canada said a strong ridge of high pressure from the Yukon would advance towards the British Columbia Interior this morning.
“The cold Arctic air associated with this ridge will spread from the northern interior to the south through today and tonight, with temperatures lowering to around 10 degrees below seasonal normal values by Monday and persisting for several days,” the statement said.
