A Warfield family is dealing with between $5,000 – $10,000 damage to their house after a fire this morning, according to Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue deputy chief Dan Derby.

Derby said the call came in at roughly 11:30 a.m.

“Crews from Warfield and Trail responded,” he said, explaining a dishwasher had caught fire while the residents were out.

“The homeowner had mostly got the fire out by the time we arrived, but there was soot and smoke throughout the main part of the house,” Derby said. “We were more focussed on using our fans to clear the smoke and make sure it was safe for them to go back in.

“This is a good reminder to run appliances when you’re at home, rather than when you’re out.”

He said no one was injured.

“They’ve already got a restoration company coming to help with the clean-up,” he said.
