A Castlegar man got an early Christmas present yesterday when he escaped unscathed from a burning vehicle.

Dan Derby, deputy fire chief at Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue, said a man was driving home from work in Trail when he noticed a serious problem.
“He saw flames coming from under his vehicle, and pulled over to exit the vehicle as quickly as possible,” Derby said, adding this was on Highway 22 near Oasis.

The 9-1-1 call came in at roughly 3:23 p.m., two firefighters arrived on scene by 3:30 p.m. and the fire was extinguished by 3:37 p.m.

“Unfortunately, the vehicle was a total loss,” Derby said. “It’s a frustrating thing to have happen, especially at this time of year, but at least he was fine and uninjured.”

Derby said there is no concern, at this time, that the fire was suspicious in nature.
