Derby derring-do delights at the Cominco Arena this weekend
For those of you that don’t know, Trail BC maintains the quaint tradition of the Miss Trail pageant – but MISS TRIAL is not that pageant, and will be far from quaint.
Saturday, May 31 at 5 pm in the impressive Cominco Arena, the Rossland Trail Roller Girls (RTRG) will have hometown fans at their backs as they face Valley Brutality in the last regular season double-header of the WKRD’s 2014 derby season. Determining their ranking for semi-finals, this game will be a significant one to both teams in deciding their next opponent. RTRG is expected to pull out all the stops, employing every trick in the pockets of long-time skater Jenatomic Friction and wriggly new jammer Maulie Jones. Their jammers will have to be slippery to avoid the famed and thunderous hits of the Valley Brutality. Both teams boast tough blockers and resilient jammers, and if Hellkat von D lives up to her name the Brutality will give as good as they get!
At 7 pm, the Nelson Killjoys and the Dam City Rollers take to the track for arguably the most anticipated game of the year. Always a close game and a fierce one, these teams will vie for the first and second places at the end of the regular season. The statistics alone make this game exciting – ranked 33 in Canada, the Killjoys are just narrowly ahead of the Dams at 42. This gives the Killjoys an estimated 60 per cent chance of winning, but with a narrow point margin – one narrow enough that the Nelson team had best not get complacent, as the Dams are coming in hot off of a travel-game win and are hoping to keep their momentum.
Adding to the subtext of this bout is the entertaining rivalry that has sprung up between the Dams’ Kitty Karnage and Concrete Cindy of the Killjoys. Kitty has made a name for herself in the WKRD as the blocker to watch for, laying waste to all in her path, especially jammers, for 4 consecutive seasons. But she won’t risk a catnap during this game unless she wants her whiskers run over by a cement truck, because CC means business. From personalized online memes to trackside call-outs, this duo have had their eyes twinkling on each other for a full season now and there are sure to be bruises aplenty before they sit down together for a well-deserved beverage after the game.
Just in case two derby games weren’t excitement enough, RTRG have also added the twist of offering prizes to friends and fans that want to get in on the pageant spirit! As there is nothing derby loves more than dressing up, join us in your tuxedo, prom dress, or evening wear of your choice and be prepared to win fabulous prizes!
Come to Trail this Saturday to have a bite, a drink, and a great time watching the most exciting and anticipated games of the roller derby season, and find out in person what the playoff seeding will be!
