Kimberley’s Tom Buchy won the Kootenay Men’s Curling Zone title in record time.

Buchy, third Fred Thomson of Nelson, second Dave Toffolo and lead Darren Will, won three straight, the clincher a 7-2 win over Ken McHargue of the host club, to capture the Zone title Saturday at the Sparwood Curling Club.

The Buchy rink now advances to the 2014 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship at the Vancouver Curling Club February 5-9, 2014.

Buchy built up a 5-0 lead after five ends before McHargue scored two singles in the sixth and seventh ends.

However, the Buchy rink scored two in the eighth with a raise takeout to secure the A-event crown and the top seed from the Kootenays.

In B-C event, T.J. Perepolkin took the long route to the second qualifying berth defeating Rob Ferguson of Trail 8-6.

Perepolkin from Vernon, with third Deane Horning, second Tyler Orme, lead Don Freschi and spare Kevin Nesbitt curled six games before advancing as the second qualifier.

The sixth game was necessary after Ferguson scored a 6-5 win in the C-event semi final over Perepolkin.

Perepolkin’s last stone went long allowing Ferguson to score one to force an extra game.
