The Nelson Leafs accomplished something the franchise has done in a few years — win in Castlegar.

And the Green and White used a couple of former Rebels to get the job done.

Travis Wellman, who came to Nelson in an off-season trade, scored three times and another ex-Castlegar castoff Jamie Vlanich had two assists to lead the Leafs to a 5-2 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory Friday in the Sunflower City.

Castlegar is the defending KIJHL Champion.

The win keeps the Leafs perfect in September after the franchise reeled off five exhibition victories.

Nelson, out shooting the home side 38-27, including a 12-4 advantage in the opening period, held period leads of 3-1 and 3-2.

Brandon Sookro and Robson Cramer added singles.

Ed Lindsey and Quinn Klimchuk replied for Castlegar.

Tyler Moffat earned the win in goal while Nate Rabbitt was the loser for Castlegar.

The Leafs host Creston Saturday at 7 p.m. in the NDCC Arena to open the regular season at home.

Castlegar hosts Grand Forks Border Bruins at 7:30 in the Complex.

Hawks outlast Braves in Lilac City

Beaver Valley used a balanced attack to dump Spokane Braves 5-2 Friday at the Eagles Ice Arena in the Lilac City.

Kyle Hope, Keanan Patershuk, Sam Swanson, Taylor Stafford and Ryan Edwards scored for the Hawks.

Kurtis Redding and Levi Waterman replied for Spokane.
