UPDATE: A family member contacted The Source and explained the release information was wrong, and the accident actually happened on Saturday, June 29.  He also said, as of July 3, both Caroline and Amy remain in intensive care. The Source is deeply sorry for the factual error, and sends our warmest wishes for a speedy recovery.

Previous story:

Two Castlegar residents were transported to US hospitals in Washington yesterday, after being struck by a suspected drunk driver at roughly 6:22 p.m., according to Washington State Patrol (WSP).

Amy Enns, 34, was driving and Caroline Enns, 59, was a passenger in a 2006 Honda Civic travelling in rural Stevens County (Highway 25 near the town of Marcus), when a 2004 Toyota pick-up crossed the centre line and struck their vehicle head-on.

Both vehicles were totalled, and Amy was transported to Mt. Carmel Hospital in Colville, while Caroline was airlifted to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Centre, both with unspecified injuries. Both women were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

The driver of the pick-up, Marcus resident Michael D. Neisler, 51, was also transported to Mt. Carmel Hospital.

Police said they believe alcohol to be a factor in the incident, and are investigating the collision as a vehicular assault and DUI.
