NPD charges Balfour man with Break and Enter

Nelson City Police, with help from RCMP detachment, charged a 37-year-old man for breaking and entering after a house was burglarized.

NPD was made aware of the burglary when a Nelson man attended his mother’s house, finding the residence had been broken into Monday (May 27).

Officers, with assistance of RCMP identification section, immediately opened the investigation and took a Balfour man into custody.

All the property was recovered and the man is now facing charges of Break and Enter and theft over $5000.

Motorists urged to remove valuables from parked vehicles

Nelson Police has responded to numerous calls during the past several days of thefts from vehicles and attempted car thefts within city limits.

Which is why NPD is reminding the public to ensure cars are locked and all valuables removed.

Even items as trivial to the owner as small change can be of value to a would-be thief. 

Nelson Police is looking for information about two specific thefts from vehicles where firearms and jewelry were stolen.

More unleashed dogs reported in city, fines add up for owners

NPD and City Bylaw department have been made aware of an increase in the number of stray or unleashed dogs in Nelson. 

Dogs picked up by the Police or Bylaw they face a fine of $70, a $60 charge for impoundment and $17/per day storage before the dog can be returned to the owner.

Additional fines will be levied if the dog is unlicensed. 

Enforcement of these bylaws will be increased as the weather warms up and people are allowing their pets to roam farther from home.

Summer-like weather brings out bears

It’s the summer and police want to remind residents garbage is a natural attractor to bears.

Residents should remember never to leave garbage out in and around homes and to put trash out only in the mornings of pickup day.

Polices have had several reports of black bears and possibly one grizzly over the last several days. 

The public should call police immediately if there’s any safety concern with a bear.
