Get out of the four-wheeler and get on the two-wheeler — don’t forget the helmet — because for those keeping score at home, this week — beginning Monday — across BC is Bike to Work Week.

The purpose of the event is to encourage bicycle commuting.

The event began in the mid-90s and in 2008, the Bike to Work BC Society was formed as a legal entity to run the event in other communities around BC.

Since its inception ridership, mainly in the larger centers, has steadily increased.

Bike to Work Week is first a marketing initiative and secondarily a cycling event. The behavior change (public health) model, relying on research conducted by both the provincial and federal governments that identified barriers to cycling and reasons for choosing cycling, was applied as a way to accomplish the goal of recruiting employees to bicycle to work.

Bike to Work Week 2013 is from May 27 through to June 2.

Registration is FREE for the Bike to Work West Kootenays. Riders can register as an individual or you can register a team. All registered participants are eligible for prizes at the end of the week.
