Nelson's Shypitka, Castlegar's Nichol off to Senior Men's Curling Championships

Two West Kootenay rinks are going have a distinct advantage next month at the 2013 Tim Horton’s BC Seniors Curling Championship in the Silver City.

Nelson’s Tom Shypitka and Castlegar Myron Nichol won the right to represent the zone at the provincial championships after winning the A and B event title, respectively during the Senior Men’s Curling tournament this past weekend in Cranbrook.

Shypitka, third Fred Thomson, second Don Freschi and lead Bill King won the A event in easy fashion, breezing through to the title with a 10-8 win over Ralph Will of Creston.

Shypitka scored two in the ninth to secure the win after blowing a 5-1 lead.

The Nelson skip defeated Nichol to open the eight-team tournament 11-2 in six ends before edging out Ken McHargue of Sparwood in the A event semi final.

Meanwhile Nichol, third Rick Brown, second Terry Kryzcka and lead Rob Babiarz took the long way to Trail.

After losing to Shypitka, Nichol won four straight, including a narrow 7-6 win over Nelson’s Nando Salviulo. Nichol defeated Will 10-5 in the B final.

The championships attracted two teams each from Creston, Nelson and Trail and one from both Castlegar and Sparwood.

The 2013 Tim Horton’s BC Seniors Curling Championship is scheduled for the Silver City February 11-17.

Horning, Buchy represent Kootenays at Men’s Championships

The Deane Horning rink of Trail and Kimberley’s Tom Buchy will be in the hunt for a Brier shot as the two skips tackle the best in the province at the Canadian Direct Insurance B.C. Men’s Provincial Championship February 5-13 in Parksville.

Horning is joined by third Don Freschi, second Rob Nobert, lead Brad Wood and fifth man Kevin Nesbitt.

Joining Buchy is third Dave Stephenson, second Dave Toffolo and lead Darren Will.

The B.C. winner represents the province at the the Canadian Men’s Curling Championship at Edmonton’s Rexall Place March 2-10.
