POLICE: Second round of drunk driving in an hour sends man to jail

A court date and driving prohibition was not enough for a 38-year-old man from Cranbrook, B.C. to stay off the road.
On Sunday, Sept. 9, at about 4:00 p.m. Midway RCMP stopped a vehicle on Highway 33 in Rock Creek, B.C. The male driver, on probation with conditions not to be driving, was known to police as already banned from driving, explained Cpl. Kevin Christensen of the Midway RCMP detachment.
Refusing a breath sample, the man was suspected to also be impaired. The RCMP impounded his vehicle for 30 days and he was given another driving prohibition. Released on documents to attend court to answer a list of charges, the driver was given a ride to where he was staying by the officer.
“About 20 minutes later the same driver drove past the original investigating officer, now driving a large motor home (that had no insurance),” said Christensen. “The police officer eventually stopped the motor home after a very short chase and arrested the driver a second time.”
The driver was still impaired by alcohol and again refused a breathalyzer sample.
The man now faces numerous other charges and his motor home was impounded. The police took no chances that the driver had access to a third vehicle so the suspect was held in custody overnight at the Grand Forks RCMP Detachment.
The male subject made his first court appearance on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Grand Forks, B.C. to answer to a list of ten charges including:
- Impaired Driving X 2,
- Refuse to Provide Breath Sample X 2,
- Driving while Prohibited X 2,
- Breach of Probation X 2,
- Dangerous Driving, and
- Flight from Police/Cause Pursuit.
