Toddler dies in Surrey pool accident Sunday

A toddler is dead and an elderly women is clinging to life after a pool accident Sunday night in Surrey.
At approximately 9 p.m., Surrey RCMP attended a residential apartment complex in the 10500 block of 152nd Street for a report of a possible drowning.
When RCMP arrived at the scene, Emergency Health Services were performing CPR on a 20-month-old male toddler and his 51-year-old grandmother.
The pair who were both found floating in the complex’s outdoor pool by residents of the complex and unresponsive.
Both victims were transported to hospital by ambulance. T
he young child, despite the best efforts of hospital staff was unable to be revived. The grandmother is currently on life-support and in critical condition.
“With the summer season now upon us, this unimaginable tragedy is a reminder to the public to always be mindful of young persons’ vulnerability around bodies of water,” said Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger in an emailed press release.
“It is also a reminder for us as parents or guardians to have an awareness of our own abilities as life-savers.”
Surrey RCMP are currently assisting the BC Coroners Service with the investigation into the death of the child.
Foul play is not suspected in this incident. Early indications are that the child fell into the pool and the grandmother, a non-swimmer, attempted to rescue the child.
