A sexual assault in downtown Trail in the middle of the afternoon this weekend saw police identify and arrest a suspect within hours of the incident, according to RCMP Sgt. Rob Hawton.

“On Sunday …at approximately 1:50 p.m., a young lady in her late teens was sitting on a bench on Cedar Avenue in Trail, when she was approached by a 36-year-old male and sexually assaulted by inappropriate touching,” Hawton said. “She broke free and went to her employer, who called police. There were no other witnesses and the suspect left the area after the incident. The victim did not know her attacker, but was able to provide a description.”

“With the assistance of surveillance cameras and employees from a local business, police identified and arrested the suspect (a Trail resident) approximately six hours later.”

Hawton said the suspect is now charged with sexual assault and is remanded in custody, to appear in Grand Forks Provincial Court on July 11.

“This is a very unusual occurrence, for it to happen downtown, in the middle of the day – it’s very bizarre,” he added. “We’re happy to have been able to identify the suspect and get him into custody.”
