Stephanie McAuley of Trail had three points sparking Team Kootenay to a convincing 6-1 victory over North West in the consolation round of the 2012 B.C. Winter Games U16 Girl’s Hockey in Vernon.

McAuley scored twice to spark Team Kootenay to a seventh-place finish in the tournament.

Emma Hare of Nelson, Kira Steliev of Nakusp and Cranbrook’s Sara Weimmer and Tiana Ewasiuk added singles for Team Kootenay.

Merissa Dawson of Nelson added an assist.

Catalina Hartland of Kaslo was in goal for the winners.

Team Kootenay opened the tournament dropping a 7-1 decision to Fraser Valley.

Hare scored the only goal while Cranbrook’s Natasha Singer was in goal.

North East and Vancouver Island added to the Kootenay woes, each scoring identical 4-0 shutouts.

The B.C. Games can be a survival of the fittest for athletes.

For example, the U16 girls caught a bus in Castlegar at 1:25 a.m. Thursday morning arriving in Vernon at 7:45 a.m.

The team was on the ice later that day in Lumby against Fraser Valley.

After three days of competition, the team arrived home Sunday at 10:30 p.m. very tired.
