This weekend the Black Jack Ski Club will be hosting a NorAm/Teck Sprint Series race. According to a press release from the club, the event will “bring in about 120 athletes, with a total of 400 people including coaches and families.  This is the top level of Cross Country skiing in North America and attracts skiers from the US and Canadian National teams including several 2010 Olympians.”

Deanne Steven from Tourism Rossland said that “This event has proven to be a major economic generator for the Rossland tourism community.  We see a terrific amount of spin-offs for accommodation, restaurants and retail during these races.”

Ian Sibbald, Chief of Competition, from Black Jack is delighted with the level of sponsorship from the local community and would like to acknowledge the series sponsors Haywood Capital Markets and Teck, as well as the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (Diamond Sponsor), Red Mountain Resort Lodging, Nelson and District Credit Union, Gerick Cycle and Sport, Kootenay Nordic Sports and Able Plastics( major local sponsors).

Black Jack is excited to be able to showcase not only the club but also the fantastic facilities that have been made possible thru generous grants and donations from the local community.

Black Jack is seeking volunteers for this great community event for various positions and skill sets.  The public is encouraged to attend the races and full details can be found on Black Jack’s website.

Black Jack Cross Country ski club is Rossland’s world class Nordic ski facility whose mission is to build a community of Nordic Skiers by providing and sustaining excellence in programs and services

Saturday will be a free technique sprint and Sunday will be a free technique mass start.

Race times are 9am Saturday with the heats starting at 11am.  On Sunday the races start at 10am.

The club would like its members to know that hosting a race of this size will result in some disruption. “These events are a significant fund raiser for our club but do lead to some disruption.   We appreciate your patience and cooperation.”

  • On Saturday the trails will be open but access will only be out Gibbards.  The other trails from Aquaduct in to the trail head will be closed until about 2pm.
  • On Sunday  the trails will all be closed until about 2pm. Try skiing at biathlon that day or come enjoy the race.  Jackrabbits is still on at 1pm in the field across the road.
