On November 16, 2011, four Canada Border Services Agency officers working in the Okanagan and Kootenay District were the proud recipients of the Peace Officer Exemplary Award.

This award was created by the Governor General in 2004 to recognize peace officers who have been employed at least 20 years in protecting the safety of the public in Canada, and who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner.

Only peace officers working for the CBSA, Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Environment Canada, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Parks Canada are currently eligible to receive this medal.

The CBSA would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the great work, dedication and service of these peace officers:

Congratulations to: Officer Chris Smith of the Port of Paterson with 22 ½ years of service; Superintendent Brad Britton of the Port of Paterson with 23 years of service; Superintendent Kevin Kearney of the Ports of Nelway and Waneta with 20 years of service; and Officer Richard Chanig of the Port of Waneta with 21 years of service.
