Bantam Wildcats finish in the middle of the pack during Kelowna female hockey tournament

The West Kootenay Bantam Wildcats finished in the middle of the pack during a female hockey tournament this past weekend in Kelowna.

The Cats, consisting of players from Kaslo, Nelson, Castlegar, Rossland and Trail, were 1-2-1 during the weekend tilt against competition from throughout the province.

The Cats opened the tourney bowing to Kelowna 3-1 with Merissa Dawson scoring the only goal.

West Kootenay then rebounded with an impressive performance, defeating Abbotsford 6-4 behind the three-goal of Nelson’s Emma Hare.

Molly Benbow and Paige Gattafoni also scored for West Kootenay.

West Kootenay then came up against a powerhouse in the form of Tri-Cities, losing 10-4. Tri-Cities jumped all over the Cats in the first period, building a 6-0 lead.

Hare once again led the West Kootenay scoring with three goals. Team captain Stephanie McAuley added the other marker for West Kootenay.

The Cats then tied Terrace 4-4 on the Sunday.

Jesse Cooper of Nelson scored twice and Gattafoni and Hare added singles for West Kootenay.

Catalina Hartland of Kaslo was in goal for all games.

The Cats opened the season by grabbing three of four points in a two-game set against Cranbrook.

West Kootenay opened with a 3-2 win in Castlegar. The teams tied 1-1 in Rossland.

Hare scored twice in the win with Cooper adding the single.
In the Rossland game, McAuley scored the only goal for West Kootenay.
