New cop hits ground running with grow-op bust on Columbia
Two Castlegar residents have been arrested after a search warrant was executed on their Columbia Avenue home last Wednesday.
Castlegar RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew said over 100 marijuana plants, along with pre-packaged marijuana, were found in the home in the 100 block of Columbia Avenue.
A 29-year-old female and 37-year-old male were arrested and are facing charges of production of a controlled substance, with their first court appearance scheduled for June. The Ministry of child and Family Development was contacted, as an 11-year-old child also resides in the home.
The owner of the property, which is a rental, was contacted as well.
Mathew said the bust was the result of initiative shown by the detachment’s newest member.
“Constable Jason Tait, from Lake Anahim, has only been here maybe two weeks,” she explained. “He was just out for a walk, getting acquainted with his new town, when he thought, ‘hmmm, I know that smell…'”
Unable to simply walk onto private property without a warrant, Tait proceeded with the follow -up work required to secure a warrant and search the residence, resulting in the arrests.
