There have been some serious trust issues brewing between the Beaver Valley Nitehawks of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League and Trail Smoke Eaters of the B.C. Hockey League for some time.

Those issues reached an all-time low Saturday (January 5) outside the Cominco Arena when Hawks coach Terry Jones, along with Beaver Valley players, stood in front of Smokies’ bus to protest the suspension of forward Ryan Edwards.

The Lil’ Gretzky’s Preschool Hockey program for kids 3-5 years starts this week!   The program will run for the month of January, on Mondays from 3:15-4:15pm starting Monday, January 7.   This is a fun approach to getting comfortable on the ice and in an Arena setting and is geared towards children with limited or no skating experience.  This is a great building block to our Recreation Hockey Program for older kids.   Coordinated by Kari Kuznecov, this parent participation program is sure to be fun!

43-year-old Oklahoma man dies at Whistler

Whistler RCMP are investigating a sudden death which occurred on Whistler Mountain on Jan. 7. RCMP were contacted after a skier on Franz’s Meadows was passing a cliff area and noticed a male who appeared to be in need of help. When the male didn’t respond to the passerby, he contacted Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol to attend. RCMP from Whistler Detachment also attended the scene. Attempts were made to treat the male by ski patrol and physicians at the scene, however they were unable to revive the male, according to Sgt. Rob Knapton of the Whistler Detachment.

The Nelson and District Community Complex played host to the B.C. Hockey Under-16 Evaluation Camp this past weekend.

The camp attracted 20 players, run through practice and games, competing for 19 spots at the B.C. Cup set for later this season in Duncan.

"Obviously is was very difficult for coaches and evaluators having to choose one player that was not moving on," said evaluator and Kootenay Wildcats coach Cary Fisher.

"The numbers were 10 selected from the East kootenay and nine selected form the west," he added.

This weekend, January 5 and 6, Rossland's Black Jack Ski Club will be hosting two Kootenay Cup races--a classic sprint on Saturday and a mass start free technique race on Sunday.

The end of the world

The end of the world

On December 21, according to some Mayan calendar readings, the world was to end.  As I write this, several days later, the world seems just fine.

One shamanistic friend of mine explained the upcoming “event” a little differently. The interpretation he put forward posited the end of the calendar indicated the start of a new age, a new world. The world as we know it would end, but the “end” would shift the world to a new paradigm, not annihilation.
