Let’s all play a bit of weather roulette — Rosslanders can head down the hill after Rossland’s Mountain Market on Thursdays, weather permitting, to enjoy Kootenay Savings’ Music in the Park.  Take a lawn chair to sit on, and a tooney (or more) to donate for the good times, and settle yourself in comfort at Gyro Park.

Here are the shows happening on July 19 and 26, and what the Trail  Arts Council has to say about them:

July 19th- Kootenays Savings Music In The Park presents: THE YOUNG’UNS:

“Voted ‘Best Group’ at the 2015 and 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards The Young’uns have become one of the foremost groups on the UK folk scene.  11 years ago this trio teamed up to create pitch perfect harmonies both subtly accompanied and acapella.  Their songs are  warm, witty and inspirational.  The Young’uns take advantage of their countries rich traditional musical tales and tie them into their very own engaging and heart-felt songs that fill their audiences with an array of emotions.   Storytellers at heart these three masters of the stage seamlessly switch from beautiful ballads to brilliant banter, from profoundly poignant songs to irreverent humour.

“The harmonies are glorious, the wit is waspish. The songs are powerful, the banter is relentless and the audience is happy. What’s not to like?”  –Colin Erwin, The Guardian

“The Young’uns are taking Western Canada by storm this July showing at Folk Festivals in Vancouver, Harrison, Canmore and Calgary.  We are so lucky to have them stop in our vibrant community to dazzle us with some authentic Irish folk.”

July 26th- Kootenays Savings Music In The Park presents: MICHAEL OCCHIPINTI: SHINE ON

“This is a spectacular group performing music by John Lennon and the Beatles uniquely arranged by Michael Occhipinti. The musicians in the group collectively boast over 20 JUNO Award nominations, and include the distinct voices of Elizabeth Shepherd, Yvette Tollar, and Dominic Mancuso, paired with the singular talents of Mark Kelso (drums), Kevin Turcotte (trumpet), Roberto Occhipinti (bass), and Michael Occhipinti (guitar). Shine On came together in December of 2010 for a concert to mark the 30th Anniversary of John Lennon’s passing. Taking utter delight in the audience’s enthusiasm and the chance to work together performing an iconic repertoire, the musicians recorded and released the album The Universe of John Lennon in the summer of 2012, and have since appeared at festivals and venues from St. John’s to Victoria to New York.

“Tracing an arc from Lennon’s best work from Beatles’s albums such as Revolver and Rubber Soul to his last solo work, Shine On is a genre-crossing group that is a tribute like no other.”

So cross your fingers for breaks in the showery weather, and get the lawn chairs and toonies all ready to go.
