LETTER: Dreaming of a future for the Mountain Kingdom

Dear editor,

I attended a workshop in Trail over the last couple days called “Heart-Mind Inquiry”.  The purpose was to create positive change in our communities, with a focus on building compassion in kids.

As part of the process, we were asked to dream five years into the future.  I don’t usually DO creative writing, but once in a while….

The Dream: Rossland, RSS, Red, Eclipses, &Bullying

It is August 2017.  The expansion of Red Mountain Resort continues, but with a lot of community input.  The new owners have been true to their word and kept the needs of the community first.  This approach has been successful for them as well, for Rossland is truly a place that people aspire to visit and live.

The expansion of RSS has been completed.  The number of children attending school in Rossland has gotten to levels no one expected five years ago.  Blended Learning at RSS is now a model for education in BC and beyond.  The most exciting development in my mind is the way the whole community has embraced using “The Golden Rule”.  Many school administrators come to Rossland to learn how this concept has literally wiped out the concept of bullying at RSS and within the community at large.  No one gets bullied, because everyone treats others the way they wish to be treated.

Meanwhile, we have a bunch of kids with us on this river rafting trip.  My wife and kids along with other friends are all part of our flotilla.  Tonight we’re stopping at a campsite that will situate us on the midline for maximum duration of the Total Solar Eclipse that will take place tomorrow.  I’ve been waiting for this day a long time…

The cool thing to me is that this dream isn’t very far off from our reality.  Rossland, RSS, and even the current owner group at Red, all seem to be perhaps heading in this direction.  FYI, if you want to know more about the use of the Golden Rule with Bullying, check out www.bullies2buddies.com
