Many families in the Columbia Basin rely upon child care. To help meet this need for quality spaces, 67 child care providers in 24 communities will be creating up to 198 new spaces and improving 1,256 spaces. These projects are being undertaken with nearly $1.4 million from Columbia Basin Trust’s Child Care Capital Grants.

A man who allegedly exposed himself to three young girls remains on the loose, but police are following up leads as we speak, according to Trail RCMP top cop Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“The Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP have followed up with one tip received from the public; however, have been able to eliminate that person from suspicious,” he said in a press update Monday.  “The investigation continues.”

The wee hours of Saturday morning saw police dealing with back-to-back public intoxication files, according to a press release issued today.

“On Oct. 19, at 3:23 a.m., the Trail and Greater District Detachment RCMP responded to a report of a fight on Rossland Avenue outside of the Rex Hotel in Trail,” said RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. “Two (24-year-old and 27-year-old) intoxicated male suspects were located wrestling each other on the ground upon RCMP arrival at the scene.”

 The shenanigans didn’t end with that altercation.

Police are searching for a man in hopes of having a conversation with him and ensuring that he and those around him are safe, but not in connection with any crime, according to Trail top cop RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

Interior Health (IH) is urging residents using or considering using drugs to reconsider, or take steps to prevent overdose, following several severe illicit drug overdoses in the Castlegar area.

The overdoses appear to be the result of cocaine contaminated with fentanyl.

Anyone using illicit drugs is advised to take steps to reduce the risk:    

·         Don’t mix different drugs (including pharmaceutical medications, street drugs, and alcohol).

The judge hearing the case of a man charged in the shooting of an RCMP officer last week near Argenta has decided not to place a publication ban on information surrounding the case.

Publication bans prohibit the publication or disclosure of certain information in otherwise open court proceedings.

Preliminary estimates indicate a higher turn-out for advanced voting this election, compared to the previous one in 2015, according to a news release issued by Elections Canada.

The release said advance polls were open from Friday, Oct. 11, to Monday, Oct. 14,and,for the first time, for 12 hours each day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“According to the preliminary figures, some 4,700,000 electors voted at the advance polls in this general election. This is a 29-per-cent increase from the 3,657,415 electors who voted in advance in the 2015 general election.”

The vibe in the Castlegar & District Recreation Centre this past weekend felt more like early-March than mid-October with the Selkirk College Saints and University of Victoria Vikes battling in a two-game series that had the intensity of the post-season.

The Saints home opening weekend featured a pair of terrific British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) games that resulted in a tight 3-2 win for Selkirk College on Friday night and a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory on Saturday.
