Kaslo RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the sudden death of woman who died while snowboarding on a Wednesday, Dec. 29 afternoon.

The woman was a guest with Retallack Snow Cat Ski Lodge, said RCMP senior media relations officer Cpl. Dan Moskaluk from Penticton.

At around 3 p.m. the 32-year-old woman was amongst a group of skiers descending a run. At one point the group noticed that one woman was missing.

Marley Bassett of Nelson was joined by a few friends to officially open the Glory Ridge triple chair at the Whitewater Ski Resort.

Bassett won the raffle draw hosted by Whitewater Ski Team, the Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaris, and the Nelson Food Cupboard.

Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited concluded a very successful first year of its Drive One 4 UR School and Drive One 4 UR Community programs in Canada. The programs, which began in April, raised a total of $460,180 to date benefitting more than 158 schools and community organizations across Canada.

I took it upon myself to start a detox last week. Just a short one, three days. I know what you’re all thinking: A detox around Christmas? You’re nuts! But truthfully, I eat fairly healthy most of the time, and I’m not one to indulge on holiday treats regardless. I had high hopes. This would be easy! Police are reporting a truly bizarre interpretation of spending time with family over the holiday season, after arresting a mother and son in connection with a break-and-enter.

Nelson RCMP Sgt. Darryl Little said police were called to a break-and-enter in progress at about 2 a.m. Wednesday,  in 1000 block of Cote Rd, Crescent Valley.

A small army of volunteers fed over 300 persons at the 29th Annual Grand Forks Community Christmas Dinner, held at noon at the Gospel Chapel on Christmas day. The numbers were down slightly from last year where over 400 were served.

Whitewater Ski Resort is slowly, but surely, moving up on the Big Dogs.
For the first time in more than 15 years the Nelson-based ski resort is opening a new lift.

“It’s awesome," said Whitewater General Manager Brian Cusack in a written press release.
"I kinda hate that word,” Cusack adds with a laugh, “but, yeah, it’s awesome.”

Nelson Fire Department reported that no one was injured after responding to a house fire a the 2300 block of Bealby Road Wednesday afternoon at Horlick’s Point east of Nelson.

At approximately 3 p.m. the call came into the station that smoke was billowing from a two-bay detached garage and small building on the south side of Kootenay Lake.

When Nelson Fire Fighters arrived they found a 500-foot add-on to the existing house was on fire. Smoke could be seen across Kootenay Lake on the North Shore.

The Waneta Dam expansion could create a legacy of skilled trades people for the West Kootenay region, says a Columbia Power spokesperson.

Audrey Repin said with a guaranteed policy in place to hire apprentices on the jobsite, many of the over 400 new job hires could become journeymen trades people when the project is completed in five years.
