BC Family Day is coming up, and we are here for it! Come up to the Museum between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 for a family-friendly snow day! We’ve got an epic snow maze, a tobogganing hill, snow painting, snowman-building, an art workshop, and more! Of course, we’ll also have a campfire and serve up maple taffy, hot chocolate, and hot apple cider to keep everyone warm! We’ll close out with a family-friendly film in the Cominco-wing theatre.

Local artist Lana Jamieson will also be leading a special lino-printing workshop at the Museum! Lana will provide the skills, tools, and materials to help you create your very own lino-cut pattern block and prints. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up early for this FREE workshop!

BC Heritage Week

Did you know that Feb. 20-26 is BC Heritage week? We’ll be celebrating all week with entry by donation Tuesday to Saturday – plus a new exhibit about the Rossland Club! The Rossland Public Library will also be hosting a new outreach exhibit on cooking, with a small recipe book – featuring recipes from our collection and staff – that you get to take home with you!
We love how artistic our community is, so we’re also holding a Heritage Week colouring contest! Colouring sheets will be available at the Museum, at the Rossland Public Library, or online. Colouring sheets must be turned in to the Museum by February 28th for entry in the contest and the chance to win a Museum family membership!

Speaker Series: Lori Barkley: Sinixt in the təmxʷúlaʔx

Join us at the Museum at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 for our February Speaker Series with political anthropologist Lori Barkley: Sinixt in the tmxʷúlaʔxʷ: History from the Heart of Sinixt Territory. Sinixt history in the West Kootenays spans thousands of years prior to the settler history of our region, yet few of us know the people who have called this land home since time immemorial. Political anthropologist Lori Barkley aims to support Sinixt resurgence in their tmxʷúlaʔxʷ (pronounced: “tem-hoo-lao”) – homeland, and her most recent contribution in the publication Sinixt in the Slocan: The Last 3,000 Years is a continuation of this crucial goal. Lori continues building on her academic research to tell the story of a people fighting their bureaucratic extinction while navigating uncharted waters of Sinixt resurgence. Entry is by donation and all proceeds will be donated to the Autonomous Sinixt. Treats & refreshments will be available! More info: https://www.rosslandmuseum.ca/news/lori-barkley-2023.
