Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a cluster of local fires, according to RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

“On June 21, at 10:34 p.m. the Trail and Greater District RCMP conducted an investigation into a suspected arson to bushes at Butler Park located at 1800 Thom Street,” he said. “Trail RCMP located and arrested a suspect a short distance from the scene. The criminal investigation into the incident continues and the blaze is believed to be linked to other fires in the area.

“The suspect, a 31-year-old Trail man, faces potential criminal charges. He was later release on strict conditions and is expected to appear in court on September 17, 2020.”

Grant Tyson, of Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue, said in a release that the Butler Park fire caused some damage to the exterior of a building, and crews arrive on scene to see flames shooting 30 feet into the air.

Anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area at the time the fire began is asked to contact the Trail and Greater District RCMP non-emergency line at 250-364-2566.
