Skatepark vision coasts along

By Timothy Schafer, The Nelson Daily

Some movement has occurred on the long-awaited skatepark for Nelson, albeit of a very incremental, microscopic sort.

In the wake of a completed study on the feasibility of the parking lot of the Nelson and District Community Complex, the report has been passed to the Nelson and District Recreation Commission for review before coming to council, said City manager Kevin Cormack.

The report isn’t expected to be in council this month, he said, but it should be making its appearance in the not-too-distant future.

In June, a conceptual drawing for the facility was released, showing how the park could fit into the chosen location — next to the NDCC

In December of 2009, City staff was directed to work in conjunction with the Skatepark Committee and the Nelson and District Recreation Commission to further explore the feasibility and associated costs of locating the outdoor skatepark adjacent to the entrance way of the Nelson and District Community Complex.

In October of 2009 committee of the whole meeting the chair of the Skatepark Committee, Christine Schmidt, had recommended a suitable location for the park in the NDCC parking lot.
