RCMP clarify "stabbing incident" at Castlegar's Twin Rivers Elementary

A "stabbing incident" at Castlegar's Twin Rivers Elementary was not as dire as rumours would indicate.

Castlegar RCMP Cpl. Mike Mysko said police recieved a 9-1-1 complaint Tuesday at just after 12:30 p.m. indicating a 10-year-old student had stabbed another student.

"The incident developed when a 12-year-old boy observed the young girl playing with a small penknife on the playground and decided he should remove it for safety reasons," Mysko explained. "During this attempt, he thought he was cut and phoned 9-1-1."

Police investigation revealed there was, in fact, no injury.

"The young girl had apparently brought her small lucky Swiss Army penknife to school merely to show it off, however she had never threatened anyone with it,"" Mysko said. "The principal will be dealing with the matter internally and will be contacting all parents.

"The knife was retained by him and no student was in danger from the incident. "
