Letters to the Editor

by Robin Yassin-Kassab on 21 February 2011 - 6:29pm

Our thoughts and prayers are with the heroes and heroines and martyrs of Libya, and with our brave correspondent in Tripoli, now under fire. Communication is on and off, mainly off. Here is her most recent report. Since she sent it the phone lines have been cut entirely and the city’s electricity is also disconnected.

I live in the Ben Ashour area of Tripoli. Minutes ago my...

Dear editor,

A while ago in Rossland, there was an open forum between City staff, councillors and the public.  One of the clear messages was a promise for more   open government.  Recently, there has been a process conducted by the City of   Rossland which has been anything but open – the proposal for an  infrastructure upgrade of Columbia Avenue and Washington Street in  conjunction...

The recent City of Rossland newsletter about the Columbia Avenue and Washington Street infrastructure project should have been titled “Propagating the Myth”.  The newsletter, which was not approved by Council, contains many misleading statements.

The City has provided very little justification for undertaking this project and has done...

Dear editor,

Rossland Council has taken a step toward turning the Columbia/Washington infrastructure project into another financial fiasco like the Ophir Reservoir project. The project is based on the assumption that a maximum of $6 million will have to be borrowed to pay for the work.

Questions arise whether that will be enough money and what will we get for it?

 Dear Rossland Friends,
We don’t need to tell you how deeply, and how personally, parents in this school district have been impacted in recent months.   The threat of school closures strikes...

 Dear Editor:

The Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon is calling on the BC government and Liberal leadership candidates to support smokers who wish to quit by providing funding for nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) for those British Columbia smokers trying to quit.

City staff are giving away City property and Rossland Council is doing  nothing about it.

In October 2010, a building permit was issued for the construction of a  garage in the 1900 block of Second Ave.  The problem is the garage is being  built so that it crosses the property line and encroaches about 7 feet onto  the City’s road allowance.

When asked why a building...
