(Editor’s Introductory Note:  During the pandemic, watching too much TV can bring on boredom, irritation and an overdose of depressing news.  Books can provide welcome relief! And the library can provide books.)

Rossland Public Library

The Rossland Public Library is pleased to begin regular submissions to The Rossland Telegraph, featuring book interviews with local readers and Library events and information. In the interview portion, called “Books of My Life,” we will ask trustees, staff, and patrons to answer questions about significant books at various stages of their life. There are ten questions and interviewees can answer as many as they like.

We are beginning with the Library Board members, and our first interview is with Jeff Ross, co-chair.

1. My favourite childhood book is Little Black Goes to the Circus by Walter Farley. I knew the words by heart and would be angry with my dad when he skipped over words or pages when reading this book as the bedtime story.

2. The book I enjoyed most in school is William Golding’s Lord of the Flies.

3. A classic I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never read is Moby Dick by Herman Melville.

4. A book I’ve pretended to have read is Yann Martel’s Life of Pi. I’ve tried to read this several times, but for some reason can’t get through the first 50 pages. A lot of people seem to like this book so I just agree and pretend I’ve read it.

5. The last book that made me laugh is Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fangby Mordecai Richler. I read this with my 7 year old nephew recently and we had to take lots of wrestling breaks while reading.

6. The last book that made me cry is No Great Mischiefby Alistair MacLeod.

7. What I’m reading now is Lies, Damned Lies and Cost Accountingby Reginald Tomas Lee. A great book about the limitations of cost accounting techniques.

8. The book that changed my life is The Wealthy Barberby David Chilton. This is how I first learned to manage my money and I still apply many of the same ideas today. This is the book that sparked my interest in personal finance and lead to my career in accounting.
