Drunk driving and a roadside prohibition on Washington Street

RCMP stopped a Red Subaru Impreza on Washington Street in Rossland, just after midnight on March 10, 2019, after noticing that its windows were obscured with snow and frost; the driver seemed to be under the influence, so a roadside breath test was administered – and showed that the driver had over 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.  Accordingly, her vehicle was impounded and she received a 90-day Immediate Roadside Suspension under the provisions of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Anyone who wants to indulge in alcohol in or around Rossland should remember that there is a safer alternative than driving while tipsy. To avoid being caught – with the attendant inconvenience of having a vehicle impounded and being prohibited from driving for 30 or 90 days, depending on one’s blood alcohol level – and, much more seriously, to avoid causing a crash that would be both expensive and could also cause serious injury to oneself and others, take the “Safe Ride” option.  It’s inexpensive.

Operated by Kootenay Gateway of Rossland, the “Safe Ride” is available after 7:00 pm by phoning 250-921-6129.  Or a Safe Ride can be arranged in advance during Kootenay Gateway’s open hours by phoning 250-362-0080.  It costs only $5 for a ride from Red to Rossland’s old town area, or $10 to Black Jack or Redstone, or $30 to 40 to Trail, depending on the distance.

There’s also Cedar Taxi, at 250-521-0511.

Or Trail Taxi, at  250-921-6921. There may be other local services out there – if so, please feel free to let us know in the comments section below.

But please – don’t drink and drive.  For many reasons.
