“It all started just before 9 a.m. on Nov. 7,” Oelke said. “A 28-year-old male assaulted and tried to rob a female who was giving him a ride.”

The woman wasn’t injured, but between the 1000 and 1300 Blocks of Columbia Avenue, the suspect stole her blue Honda Civic and fled at high speed through the construction zone, “almost hitting a flagger, flattening pylons, driving on the sidewalk,” Oelke said.

“The suspect fled westbound on Hwy 3, got a flat tire a couple of km out of town, then drove on the rim for another couple of km, at which point he tried to force a pick-up truck off the road, then assaulted the driver, trying to steal that truck.

“A semi-truck driver came up and stopped to assist the driver of the pick-up truck, and they subdued the male,” Oelke said, adding that the situation was not quite over yet. “The suspect then got into the semi-truck and then tried to steal it. The driver of the semi-truck managed to get control of him and held him until police arrived.”

Adding to the mix is the fact the man, a resident of Lake Country, had been arrested by Castlegar RCMP the day before.

“The suspect had been arrested Nov. 6 for possession of a stolen pick-up truck from Langley – he had caused a pursuit on Robson Access Road, Robson Bridge and Lakeview Drive, after which he crashed the vehicle.”

He appears today in Rossland Court to face a laundry list of charges. “Too many to count,” Oelke said.

Oelke said the RCMP would like to hear from anyone who witnessed these events, and the detachment’s non-emergency line is 250-365-7721.
