Province comes to Kootenay Country at 2011 UBCM

The “Welcome to Kootenay Country” initiative took part in the Union of BC Municipalities Convention in Vancouver last week, utilizing the same exhibit that was showcased successfully in Richmond’s “Ozone” during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

This unique partnership of the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay, Kootenay/Boundary and East Kootenay and Columbia Power Corporation proved to be immensely popular once again, with visitors from across the province stopping by to visit the booth.

Conference participants had the opportunity to learn what makes life in the Kootenays special through the exhibit’s overview of lifestyle, commercial and service amenities, as well as economic and tourism opportunities.

This year, the Welcome to Kootenay Country booth offered something new to highlight this special part of the province – a “Magical Tour of the Kootenays.” UBCM attendees had the opportunity to win a five-day spring/summer or winter getaway to Kootenay County or a grand prize of a both seasonal trips, highlighting recreation, accommodation, dining and attractions in a variety of communities in the West Kootenay/Boundary and East Kootenay regions.

“I have never won anything in my life, said grand prize winner Herman Halvorson, Chair of the Regional District of North Okanagan. I am absolutely elated and ecstatic to start my golf vacation in the West Kootenay/Boundary.”

Mayor Ann Henderson of Salmo, Coun. Janine Haughton of Salmo, director Wendy Booth from the Regional District of East Kootenay and Marguerite Rotvold, chair of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary all worked on the initiative. Columbia Power was also part of the group.
