In a media release Friday, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development said effective Monday, April 1, 2019, the kokanee angling season on the upper west arm of Kootenay Lake will be reduced to four days in 2019.

The Ministry, adding the 2018 season was 28 days, said this measure is an effort to support long-term kokanee conservation.

Interior Health (IH) and the BC Coroners Service said in a media release Friday, the two organizations are urging anyone using or considering using drugs to take steps to prevent overdose in the wake of an increase in cartfentanil detections in the IH region in March 2019.

IH and BC Coroners Service said it is unclear which substances carfentanil has been detected in.

New information is surfacing about a fatal MVI  and fuel spill on Hwy 3 near Salmo last night.

RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services Sgt. Chad Badry said the vehicle involved was a B-Train fuel truck, meaning a tractor hauling two fuel tankers.

Highway 3 14 kilometers east of Salmo opened during Thursday evening and into Friday morning to single, alternating traffic following a tractor trailer crash that killed the Alberta man.

However, the road will be closed from 8 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. for vehicle recovery. DriveBC said the estimated re-opening of the highway will be 2 p.m.
