Village of Salmo Adopts 2017 Budget and Tax Bylaw
Salmo Mayor Stephen White and council passed the tax and budget bylaw for the Village during Tuesday’s regular meeting that has taxpayers see a two percent increase in taxes for the upcoming year.
The 2017 budget and property tax bylaw came following months of public meetings in the Village of Salmo.
“We are very pleased to have kept taxes low, while budgeting for significant infrastructure and community upgrades,” Mayor White said Thursday in a media release.
The increase to Salmo property owners, on an average home assessed at $160,000 would amount to an increase of 83 cents a month or $10 a year.
In addition, Salmo taxpayers will notice that their tax bills have a reduction of $163.29 per parcel as council eliminated the long-standing parcel tax earlier this year
While the Village of Salmo collects about $370,000 in municipal taxes, this year’s budgeted expenditures total over $2.5 million. Funding for most of the projects in the upcoming year were made possible through a series of successful grants.
The more than 20 budgeted priority items include:
- major upgrades to every facet of the wastewater treatment system
- LED street light conversion, cemetery improvements
- dike maintenance and expansion
- Canada 150 beautification
- facility and equipment upgrades in addition to support for various community initiatives such as BearSmart Salmo and the hiring of a WaterSmart Salmo Ambassador
