Apples, pears, plums!  Everyone who wants to pick fruit from trees growing on public land is invited to meet up at L’ecole des Sept-Sommets — formerly Maclean Elementary School — at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 17.  Groups can then spread out around town to find fruit on public land and harvest it.

The “press” part of the event will start on Saturday at noon and continue until 5:00 pm.  On Sunday, pressing will start at 10:00 am.  People with fruit to press can take it to Larry Doell’s place at the bottom of Esling Drive, and convert it to delicious juice.  Please take containers — jugs and jars — to hold your juice, and please take a $10 donation to reward Larry for his time, work, and wear and tear on the fruit press.

If you have questions, or want to book time on the fruit press, email mayor@rossland.ca or call 250-521-1500.

Meanwhile, to avoid attracting bears to your yard — and putting bears in harm’s way — please pick your fruit, keep the ground clear of windfalls, and keep your compost really unappealing to bears or enclose it in an electric fence.  If you don’t want bears in your fruit trees, the best strategy is to surround them with active electric fencing.

Don’t store food or pet food in porches.  Please also refrain from putting out birdseed until after the snow flies, and obey the new bylaw requirement to place your garbage out for collection in a lidded garbage can, and put it out no earlier than 5:00 am on garbage day.
